The Club finals day tournament was held on Sunday 9th July. As in previous years it was a hot day with plenty of sunscreen liberally applied.
The men’s singles was won by Darren who beat John. John didn’t get going in the first set but rallied back in the second but too late. The ladies singles was won by Jackie who beat Jenny. The match was closer than the score would suggest – most of the games were 40-30. The mixed doubles saw myself and Gill Thompson beat Jan Lewtas and John Culley. This was a tight and very enjoyable match with some great rallies. The men’s plate was an epic three set thriller between Steven and David. Steven took the first with David showing that age and low cunning will beat youth…Long baseline rallies and many deuces were the order of the day. Alex, the umpire had to be given glasses of water and plates of food to keep him going. Needless to say, this set the schedule back somewhat. The Ladies doubles between Jan & Bridget v Gill and Jenny was another three setter with both pairs not giving ground. This was played in good spirit – and was well contested. The umpire had to be supplied with a cushion part way through. The last match of the day – the mens doubles - was played in the gathering gloom and was between myself & son Steven v Trevor and Jim. We managed to prevail, aided by a father/son understanding. The tournament finished at 7pm so it was a long day.
Many thanks to those who helped set up and put away, to those who provided the excellent food, the umpires and line judges. Also, thanks to the girl and boy boys.
